Canon History: Lunafreya's Story on the Final Fantasy WikiPersonality:'I do not fear death. What I fear is doing nothing, and losing everything.'Like many characters in
Final Fantasy XV, Lunafreya is defined by her station and her duty. Before all else, she is the Oracle, she who communes with the planet's gods, and the daughter of the last Queen of Tenebrae. As such, she is elegant, gracious, diplomatic, compassionate, and unyielding, as both royalty and a religious icon must be. She walks with purpose and poise, as every step she takes is one towards her goal, without exception, without distraction: From the time she was twelve years old, Luna knew what she was to do in this world.
Help the Chosen King clear the Scourge from their star. Guide her precious friend, an injured boy only eight years old, onto the path he must take to save the world.
For that reason, she releases the King of Lucis's hand and allows herself to be taken captive so that he might escape with his son, Noctis, that injured child. For that reason, she spends twelve years under the thumb of a mad empire, communicating with Noctis only through secret missives, training to be the healer and moral voice her bloodline demands of her. For that reason, she becomes the youngest Oracle--the youngest envoy to the Astral gods themselves--in history, ascending to her dead mother's title at only sixteen years old.
For that reason--that boy--Lunafreya works tirelessly, giving her very life to light the way for Noctis. She calls the gods to his side, and in so doing, pays in blood, pain, and loss. And unlike Noctis, who has the support of his family and brothers-in-arms, Lunafreya does it almost entirely alone, with only her ethereal companion Gentiana and her loyal dogs at her side.
If nothing else, Lunafreya knows dedication.
She shows it in the
Kingsglaive movie, politely but firmly refusing all attempts to keep her safe and leaping--literally--headlong into danger when she deems it necessary to secure Noctis's future. She jumps from a crashing airship towards a citadel under attack, trusting that, as long as she does the right thing, a miracle will help her do it. She runs both on reckless self-sacrifice and a powerful, unshakable faith befitting the Oracle, and she puts all of it towards that singular messianic goal: save Noctis, save the world.
But, while she is resolute, she is not ruthless. As Oracle, princess, and lonely young woman, Lunafreya acts with a healer's compassion, always choosing the road of graceful generosity, even towards her enemies. It may be she doesn't know any other way. Her entire life, she was taught to be perfect and selfless in service to the people. But for a girl whose only comfort in captivity was the memory of kinder, gentler times under her mother's peaceful reign, sowing even a small seed of good in the world must have always brought her a measure of genuine happiness.
Her isolation, trapped for much of her time in her family's manor under Imperial watch, provided few options for Lunafreya except to excel at the handful of skills expected of her as Oracle. She's an eloquent speaker and writer, a flawless public face, a courteous diplomat well-versed in matters of legends and gods; but by the same token, she never learned to drive--why teach your caged bird how to fly away?--cook, hunt, write a job application, or, likely, even tell a joke. She's kind but formal on all occasions, and in some ways, she seems unreal. Like the pure white of her dresses, Lunafreya holds herself as something untouched and untouchable, even though all she wants is to be a real human girl once more like she was when she met Noctis.
But even that want--the desire to be with him, to be human as well as a queen--is something she gives up for duty. Even though she knows calling the gods is killing her, destroying any chance she has of being with Noctis, she keeps at it. For twelve years she's lived with her mother's example, throwing herself before Luna's brother to protect him from fire and sword. From
Kingsglaive until her death, she carries King Regis's last words and actions with her, as he died to buy her time to escape Insomnia and bring the Ring of the Lucii, the channel of Lucian power, to Noctis. She's borne witness to more death and horror than she ever lets on, and every wound, every loss, is added weight to what she knows she must do.
She's clever, beneath that serene formality. Were she not forced forever into the role of guiding angel, she could be a twenty-something smart-mouth, the subtlest master of teasing and poking fun. She could be sometimes charmingly childlike, delighting in the simple comforts of adoring dogs or blooming flowers. But the sassy-sweet woman she might otherwise be is crushed beneath the burden of the Oracle, and the true tragedy of Luna's life is that she never saw the other side of duty's prison; she died as she lived, a small sacrifice in the greater battle.
Or, in short: Strong Female Character gets fridged, news at 11.
Abilities:POWERSOracle: Rather than predicting the future, the Oracle's role in Eos is to advocate for humanity in commune with the Astrals, the planet's deities. As the Oracle, Lunafreya understands the Astral language and has the ability to wake the Astrals from their resting places, rather like a traditional JRPG summoner. This taxes her life force considerably and was one cause of her death.
Obviously, Luna's hereditary connection to Eos's gods wouldn't have any bearing LifeAftr's deities, but she might still feel an affinity for them, particularly those with a light-based or celestial origin. Definitely not enough to summon and bully them into making contracts with Noctis, but perhaps enough to ping them as friendly.
Healing: 'Blessed by the Astral gods, she calls forth the power of Eos to heal those who are suffering and afflicted.' Lunafreya is revered planetwide for her power to heal those infected with Starscourge, a parasitic disease that turns people and animals into monstrous daemons. While that is her primary healing function, she is also able to treat wounds and fatigue as she does for Noctis after his battle with Leviathan. Unlike Ardyn's abilities, healing wounds, illnesses or infections does not transfer them to Lunafreya, though she will grow weak with overuse of this magic.
In LifeAftr, this is the power I'd most like kept relatively intact, as Lunafreya doesn't have much in the way of offensive or even exploratory abilities. She can't reverse an instantaneous death, though I'd like her to be able to heal major/otherwise fatal wounds enough to keep the injured party alive long enough for less magical treatments to work. In numbers terms, maybe one major wound every one or two weeks OR one medium wound every couple days OR a handful of little booboos a day; and then against sicknesses, a general ability to ease symptoms and increase the patient's comfort, if that's reasonable.
Defensive magic: Eos is dotted with magically warded Havens where the party can camp without fear of attack by daemons or other wildlife, and one line of NPC dialogue implies that the people believe it's the Oracle's bloodline that sustains these wards. Lunafreya is also able to repel the Astral god Leviathan with a blast of light when Leviathan tries to eat her.
Being able to maintain a mild warding around a small area (like a camping tent) against active threats--that is, hungry animals or people with malicious intent, but not, like, earthquakes or rain--would be nice.
TALENTSGrace: In movement, speech, and matters of diplomacy, Lunafreya is every inch a young queen. She knows how to move a crowd, how to stir the gods, how to speak to enemy dignitaries, and
probably how to walk in heels while balancing a book on her head. You know, like they teach girls in finishing school.
Gardening: Luna's noted to have kept a garden of sylleblossoms in her hometown. While flowers aren't exactly the same as food crops, her gardening experience might still come in handy for growing vegetables, herbs, or medicinal plants.
Trident: While she's no Lucian warrior, Lunafreya shows herself able to passably defend herself with her trident in the Final Fantasy XV: Omen trailer. She at least knows the basics of using it.
Inventory:Trident of the Oracle: An
ornamental-looking trident that is nonetheless a perfectly functional armament.
Ritual gown: A
white dress torn down one side and bloodied. Comes with matching white heels.
